I was on a desperate search for a crispy, sugar-free, gluten-free, low-carb gingersnap cookie recipe to use for the crust with my eggnog cheesecake. I tried several different recipes, but they were too soft to be used as a crust base. Bradley (my 8-year-old) was quite delighted with all of my failed attempts. He enjoyed them immensely. Recently, I ran across a recipe for graham crackers on All Day I Dream About Food. Graham crackers were the perfect crispy consistency that I was in search of. It dawned on me that I could alter the recipe and transform graham crackers into ginger snaps. They turned our perfectly. ...Read More

Christmas Devotional #7: The Gift of Friends
Tonight's object lesson was a small set of photos of the boys' friends. Last night they got little photo books with pictures of their family, so they added the pictures of their friends to the book. The Christmas devotional was all about God's gift of friendship. There are many proverbs in the Bible about friendship and being a good friend. We chose 4 proverbs to discuss: Proverbs 17:17, 18:24, 27:10, and 27:17. This gave us plenty of material to talk about how God gives us good friends to support us in times of need and to challenge us to become better people. ...Read More
A Sweet Life: The High Fructose Corn Syrup Controversy
High fructose corn syrup isn't likely something you'll be sweetening your homemade cookies with, so why is it included in this series about sweeteners? 1. Because of the ubiquitous presence of high fructose corn syrup in foods and drinks, I felt it earned a rightful place in this series. It is found in a great many foods you purchase at the grocery store—yogurt, salad dressing, cereal, protein bars, snack foods, fruit drinks, pop, soups, fruit snacks, bread, cookies, condiments, crackers, candy, and the list goes on and on... 2. There is much controversy surrounding high fructose corn syrup's healthfulness or ...Read More
Christmas Devotional #6: The Gift of Family
Tonight's devotion was all about family. For our 6th Christmas devotional we wanted to tell our kids about why God created families and help them see the blessing of being part of a family that loves them. For our object lesson/gift tonight we put together a small photo album of some of their family members—not just their immediate family, but grandparents, cousins, and some aunts and uncles they are close with. They had fun flipping through and naming all their relatives. ...Read More
Christmas Devotional #5: The Gift of the Church
The Christmas devotionals continue. Tonight's devotional with the kids really got their attention—well, it got Bradley's attention, anyway. We talked to them tonight about the blessing of being a part of the church. And to do this we used a couple dolls. Yes, dolls. (In a house of all boys, we don't have too many quality dolls laying around, but we pulled it off.) ...Read More
Christmas Devotional #4: The Gift of a Home
On the 4th day of Christmas Jesus gave to me...a candle. Yes, that was tonight's object lesson. After praying together, the kids excitedly scurried to the tree to find the gifts labeled #4. After smelling their candles for a minute or so they insisted we light them before continuing with our devotion. Tonight's Christmas devotional was about the gift of a home. We first took the kids to Proverbs 24:3-4: “By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches” (ESV). We explained to them that when the Proverbs talk about a house, they ...Read More
Christmas Devotional #3: The Gift of Nourishment
Our aim with this whole series of 12 Christmas devotionals is to reinforce two important truths in our kids: first, we should be thankful for the daily gifts God has already given us; and second, we can see how all these gifts point to His greatest gift, Jesus Christ. ...Read More
